South Asian performance teams from various US varsities will convene at Yale University to participate in Dhamaal, Yale’s largest inter-collegiate cultural showcase on March 2.
Six teams from Yale are also slated to compete at the event. Dhamaal is one of the two major cultural shows organized by the university’s South Asian Society (SAS) annually, alongside Roshni which takes place in the fall.
The teams participating in Dhamaal 2024 from Yale University include -- Yale Dhvani, the university’s only music group dedicated to Indian classical music, Jashan Bhangra, the university’s premier Bhangra team since 2005, Kalaa, a premier Indian classical dance group, Avaaz, premier all-gender South Asian a capella group, Rangeela, a Bollywood fusion dance group, and MonstRAASity, a Raas+Garba group founded in 2012.
The “visitor” teams participating in the cultural showcase include – MIT Bhangra from MIT University, Boston; Dartmouth Raaz from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire; Harvard Bhangra from Harvard College, Massachusetts; UMBC Adaa from University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Rutgers Ehsaas from Rutgers University’s Newark campus; Husky Hungama, University of Connecticut; Duke Lasya from Duke University, North Carolina; and CMU Jiya from Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania.
The event will also serve as a fundraiser for Sapna NYC, a non-profit that serves low-income South Asian immigrant women and families. Donors will get a chance to enter a special raffle and a complimentary mehendi (henna) session.
The South Asian Society (SAS) at Yale University is an organization of social, cultural, and intellectual exchange for students interested in South Asia. The SAS Board and South Asian Youth Initiative organize all events. The body aims to create a community of diverse experiences and build lasting connections at Yale & beyond, as mentioned on its website.
