The Kent City Council in Washington has unanimously elected Indian-American Satwinder Kaur as president for a two-year term. Kaur, who has been on the council for seven years, replaces Bill Boyce, who nominated her for the top job.

The seven-member council is the City of Kent's legislative body, responsible for defining laws and regulations as well as approving financial spending and the city's biennial budget.

In addition to working as the council's official spokesperson, Kaur will work closely with the mayor to determine the council's support for issues and ideas.

Kaur sees her work on the council as a tremendous learning opportunity and a chance to contribute a new perspective to the city's concerns, according to a statement on the council’s website. "I want to bring new perspectives that may not have been considered before," Kaur said.

After interning at the Mayor's Office, Kaur solidified her understanding of resident issues and concerns. "Kent is often overlooked, but there are so many things about Kent that people don't know, and we have so many great stories to tell," she pointed out.

Voters initially elected Kaur in 2017 and reelected her to another four-year council term in 2021, when she was unchallenged.

Kaur, a 2004 Kentridge High School alumnus, was barely defeated in the August 2022 Democratic primary for the District 47 Senate seat.
