In a landmark collaboration, Walmart Global Tech (WGT) has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) to launch the Walmart Center for Tech Excellence.
According to a release by IIT-Madras this initiative aims to bolster Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the manufacturing and retail sectors across India by harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digitization.

At the inaugural event attended by key stakeholders, including Suresh Kumar, global chief technology officer (CTO) and chief development officer (CDO) of Walmart Inc., and prominent figures from IIT Madras, the vision of the center was unveiled.
Suresh Kumar emphasised Walmart’s commitment to leveraging technology to serve communities, stating, “The Walmart Center for Tech Excellence reiterates our commitment to communities and purpose to help people live better.”
Prof. V. Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, highlighted the significance of empowering MSMEs for economic prosperity, expressing confidence in the research conducted through the center to benefit these enterprises.
Balu Chaturvedula, SVP and country head of Walmart Global Tech, underscored Walmart’s dedication to community welfare, stating, “Our collaboration with IIT Madras is a testament to this commitment.”
The Walmart Center for Tech Excellence, under the leadership of professor Raghunathan Rengaswamy, aims to provide MSMEs with cutting-edge AI and IoT technologies, along with upskilling opportunities to enhance global competitiveness.
With approximately 255 million customers worldwide and fiscal year 2024 revenue of $648 billion, Walmart is regarded as a global leader in sustainability, corporate philanthropy, and employment opportunity.
