As India suffered a crushing loss to South Africa in the recent Test series, the only silver lining was Virat Kohli’s knock that made him the first player in history to score 2000 runs for the seventh year.
In the inaugural test at the centurion, Kohli scored 76 off 82 balls, bringing his 2023 total to 2006 runs. He had previously achieved the feat in 2012 (2186 runs), 2014 (2286 runs), 2016 (2595 runs), 2017 (2818 runs), 2018 (2735 runs) and 2019 (2455 runs).
The star batter shattered multiple records in 2023. He scored 50 ODI centuries to beat Sachin Tendulkar’s record, he became the batter with the Most runs in a single ICC Cricket World Cup event, the first-ever cricketer to smash 3,000 runs across all ICC white-ball tournaments and First-ever player to smash 7,000 IPL runs among others.
The Men in Blue however, registered their worst defeat in a Test match on South African soil in the first test. They lost by an innings an 32 runs surpassing their previous low in December 2010 when they faced an innings and 25-run loss at the same venue. Trailing by 163 runs, India were bowled out for 131 in their second innings.
They will next be seen playing for redemption at the second Test at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town from January 3 to 7.
