Veteran Kannada film actress Leelavathi, born Leela Kiran in 1937, breathed her last on December 8, 2023, at the age of 86. She passed away from age-related illness in Nelamangala, on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
Leelavathi's five-decade journey in cinemas tallied over 600 films, with 400 of them in Kannada alone. She is known for her roles in "Bhakta Kumbara," "Mangalya Yoga," and "Santha Thukaram.” She had also worked in Tamil and Telugu films.
The late actress was famous for her pairing with legendary actor Rajkumar. they were first seen together in the historical film Ranadheera Kanteerava (1960)after which she went on to act in as many as 45 films with him 27 of them as the heroine.
In 1999, she was honored with Dr. Rajkumar Lifetime Achievement Award at Karnataka State Film Awards, and also won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress – Kannada in 2006. Later, Tumkur University conferred her with an honorary doctorate in 2008.
