Young Indian shooters Varun Tomar and Esha Singh on January 8 earned gold medals in the men's and women's 10m air pistol categories at the Asian Olympic Qualifier Rifle and Pistol 2024 in Jakarta, Indonesia. With this win, both the shooters secured two additional Olympic slots for India for Paris 2024, increasing the tally to 15.

20-year-old Tomar, cousin of former world champion and Tokyo Olympian Saurabh Chaudhary, defeated Arjun Singh Cheema in the final after topping qualification with a score of 586.

In the men's 10m air pistol competition, Tomar's quota completes India's allocation. Previously, Sarabjot Singh won the discipline's Paris 2024 quota for India at the 2023 Asian Shooting Championships in Changwon, South Korea.

18-year-old Esha’s quota in the women's 10m air pistol event became India's first-ever Paris 2024 quota. In the 25-meter pistol events for men and women, Indian shooters can earn two extra quotas from the current Jakarta competition.

With a combined score of 1736, Esha Singh, Rhythm Sangwan, and Surbhi Rao also won the gold medal for India in the women's 10m air pistol team competition.

Athletes' ability to compete in the Paris Games is contingent upon their National Olympic Committee (NOC) choosing them to represent their delegation in Paris. NOCs hold the exclusive power over a country's representation at the Olympic Games.
