US demands accountability from India over alleged assassination plot

The backdrop to this situation includes charges filed in November last year by US federal prosecutors against Indian national Nikhil Gupta.

The United States has pressed for accountability from India regarding the alleged involvement of an Indian government official in a failed assassination attempt on an American citizen on US soil.

State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel reiterated this stance during his daily news conference, stating, "We continue to expect accountability from the government of India in relation to the alleged role of an Indian government employee in the failed attempt to assassinate a US citizen on US soil that occurred last summer."

Patel emphasized that the US has been engaging with Indian authorities at senior levels to express its concerns. "We continue to raise our concerns directly with the Indian government at senior levels," he added.

When questioned about a recent news report alleging that Canadian authorities arrested five Indian nationals who were planning to target a Sikh separatist at a wedding ceremony, Patel refrained from commenting. "As it relates to the news that you mentioned out of Canada, I would refer you to the Canadian government to comment on issues that are happening within their law enforcement system," he said.

In November 2023, charges were filed by US federal prosecutors against Indian national Nikhil Gupta for collaborating with an Indian government employee in the plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic in June last year and subsequently extradited to the US on June 14, 2024.

Pannun is designated as a terrorist by India and holds citizenship in both the United States and Canada. In early November, the U.S. Department of Justice revealed an indictment against an Indian national accused of participating in a thwarted plot to assassinate a leader of the Sikh separatist movement and a citizen residing in New York.
