The University of Southampton has announced the appointment of Kamlesh Kumar Patel as chancellor, along with Justine Greening. This marks the first time in the university's history that it will have dual Chancellors, succeeding the renowned comedian Ruby Wax.

Patel began his career as a social worker and has since held numerous academic and governmental positions focused on health, education, and social care. Recognized for his contributions to ethnic minority health issues, he was awarded an OBE in 1999. In 2018, he was appointed chair of Social Work England, the regulatory body for social workers in England.

Additionally, Patel serves as chair of the India Business Group and is a patron of The India Centre for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development at the university. He was awarded an honorary degree from the university in 2018.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Patel stated, “I am delighted to take up this ambassadorial role at the University of Southampton and I will do my very best to contribute to the university’s continuing development, growth, and success. I have always been hugely impressed with the world-class research that takes place here and the impact it has globally."

"I look forward to engaging with staff, students, and alumni to learn even more about this remarkable institution,” he added.

Commenting on the appointments, Ian Diamond, chair of the University Council said, “They bring an extraordinary wealth of combined experience, expertise, and dedication in areas such as mental health, social mobility, and equality, which are also of great importance to the university community. They will each play an immensely positive role as we move forward with our ambitious strategy.”

The role of the Chancellor at the University of Southampton is significant, encompassing ambassadorial and ceremonial duties, including presiding over degree ceremonies during graduations.
