West Midlands county in England recognised Indian-origin Sergeant Kiran Patel  for his exceptional leadership and crime reduction efforts as part of West Midlands Police's Operation Elevate.

The special operation is a project aimed at regenerating areas affected by serious and organized crime. Patel's recognition comes as part of the annual ‘Alumni Impact Awards,’ which took place in London last week.

The awards honor officers who have made significant contributions to their communities after completing one of Police Now’s national programs.  Eight officers from across the country were recognized during the ceremony, where they were addressed by Chief Constable Craig Guildford.

Since the launch of Operation Elevate in November 2023, there has been a 38 percent reduction in serious youth violence and a 17 percent reduction in overall crime in the areas involved, a news release stated. Patel’s work in the operation has also led to the creation of two community StreetWatch groups, including the first women-only group in the West Midlands.

Patel, who joined Police Now’s Frontline Leadership Programme in 2022, was commended for his ability to inspire his team, lead with inclusivity, and build public trust among the region's diverse community. His work has been shared with regional and national forces, the Home Office, and crime prevention conferences.

“Having been on the Police Now Frontline Leadership Programme, I’ve seen the value that Police Now provides to the personal and professional development of future police leaders, Patel said, adding, “I’ve been able to put my learning into practice within my team and communities that I serve. It is because of this I look at sharing my knowledge by supporting others around me, having been in that fortunate position.”
