Thattu, an Indian restaurant in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood has earned itself a place on the third annual New York Times Restaurant List of 50 places in the United States that the publication is most excited about. The restaurant received recognition for serving comfort food from Kerala, India's spice garden.
"We are so honoured to be on the New York Times 2023 restaurant list and are still pinching ourselves! We're so proud of our hard-working team and the overwhelming support of our Chicago community that makes this possible," Thattu remarked on its Instagram handle.
According to the restaurant's website, it was inspired by co-owner and chef Margaret Pak's love of southwest Indian subcontinent coastal cuisine.
"This former food-hall stand serving fare from the coastal southwest region of Kerala in India has found a larger home for its loud flavours, courtesy of the owners Margaret Pak and Vinod Kalathil," the recognition, written by Times food reporter and author Priya Krishna read.
"Everything here, down to the stainless steel plates the food is served on, feels homestyle. Expect fish fries, yogurt rice and coconutty curries whose remnants you’ll eagerly sop up with appam, lacy domes made of rice and coconut. Even the more playful dishes, like tater tots dusted with chaat masala, feel like those clever snacks devised in a pinch by an enterprising home cook," she emphasized.
While several of the establishments on this year's list that are declared as new have just debuted since the 2022 list was published, many others have been operational for many years and are still producing top-notch food.
