Tara Sreekrishnan announces run for California State assembly

Tara Sreekrishnan, currently a member of the Santa Clara County Board of Education, has declared her bid for the California State Assembly from District 26.
Announcing her candidacy, Sreekrishnan, a prominent member of the Indian American community in California, said that she aims to prioritize the issues faced by residents of Silicon Valley, which fosters innovation and attracts the world’s brightest.
“I believe in Silicon Valley, yet it’s crucial to acknowledge the challenges our residents face: housing affordability, climate change, traffic congestion, and an education system that needs strengthening,” she said in her election pitch.
The 30-year-old daughter of immigrants has been on the county board of education since 2021. She currently serves as the legislative director and deputy chief of staff to state Sen. Dave Cortese.
Sreekrishnan is also the co-founder of Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action, a nonprofit dedicated to combating climate change through education and public policy activities.
“With professional experience across all levels of local government – school district, city, county, and state – I’ve written and passed legislation that developed housing for the homeless, modernized our schools, curbed youth drug overdoses, and expanded job training and apprenticeship programs,” she wrote on her website.
“I’m running for Assembly because I understand what it takes to make California financially responsible, improve our education system so that our children have future career opportunities, and make sure our communities are safe, clean, and affordable,” she added.
Sreekrishnan graduated from Mills College, which is the West Coast's oldest women's college. After college, she worked as a community and political organizer for grassroots movements in her town and throughout the Bay Area.
State Sen. Dave Cortese, state Sen. Nancy Skinner, Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Cupertino community leader Mahesh Nihlani, and Ajay Bhutoria, White House Commissioner on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Affairs, are among those who have endorsed Sreekrishnan.
