In less than 48 hours of members of the Indian Diaspora creating history by winning 15 of 26 seats they contested in the British Columbia Provincial Parliament, Tania Sodhi has scripted a success story by becoming the first woman from South Asia to be elected to the New Brunswick Provincial Parliament, elections to which were held on Oct. 21.
She represents the Liberal Party that has won a clear majority. In a House of 49, the Liberals won 31 seats ousting the previous ruling party, Progressive Conservatives. The Conservatives could win only 16 seats this time against 25 held by them in the last assembly.
Interestingly, members of the Indian Diaspora sit in the Canadian Parliament (House of Commons) and the Provincial Parliaments of Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. They are the largest migrant community represented well in federal and provincial politics.
Tania Sodhi, who relocated from India to New Brunswick, currently resides in Moncton Northwest. She is deeply dedicated to fostering a brighter future for all families in her community, as she is a mother of two young girls and fully comprehends the obstacles of parenthood. Tania is a successful realtor who has gained a profound understanding of the housing needs of Moncton Northwest residents. Additionally, she manages a local daycare, where she fosters the next generation of leaders by nurturing and educating young minds.
Her journey began in India, where she practiced law, bringing valuable professional experience and a diverse perspective to her role in public service. As a dedicated community member, she says, she is looking forward to serving the residents of Moncton Northwest and working tirelessly to improve the lives of families in her riding.
