Surya Ganguli, an associate professor of applied physics and an associate director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, has been selected as a member of the 2023 cohort of the Schmidt Science Polymaths Program. As a recipient of the award he will be granted $500,000 annually for a duration of up to five years, to support his research endeavors.
Ganguli will use the grant to embark on an interdisciplinary research program aimed at comprehending the interactions among nonlinear elements in neural networks, encompassing both biological and artificial systems, to unravel the extraordinary emergent computational capabilities they exhibit.
Ganguli, currently heads the Neural Dynamics and Computation Lab at Stanford University and has served as a visiting researcher at both Google and Meta AI.
Prior to his tenure at Stanford, Ganguli was a fellow at the Sloan-Swartz Center for theoretical neurobiology in the Keck Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). During this time, he also received support from a career award provided by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Interfaces in Science Program.
Ganguli pursued a triple undergraduate major at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), specializing in electrical engineering and computer science, physics, and mathematics. He completed a Ph.D. in string theory at the Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics and the Theory Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
