Campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections, which will take place in different parts of India in just a few days, is in full swing, and vendors here are capitalizing on the excitement.
Whether it is an assembly election or a Lok Sabha election, the textile industry of Surat produces election materials for various parties across the nation. In the wake of the current elections,, the industry stands to gain a substantial boost, with sales estimated to be between US$120-140 million (1000 -1200 crores INR)
When it comes to polyester fabrics, Surat is where a lot of political parties place their orders for campaign materials like caps, flags, scarfs, and more. Polyester fabric and goods made from it are more long-lasting, resistant to fading, and affordable, which is why most political parties demand them.
The city is home to around 78,000 textile merchants, with an additional 6,000 producing campaign materials. Some traders have also received orders of various other items, which includes sarees and ladies kurtis (indian tops). Traders are also putting their employees through double shifts, so they move swiftly to fulfill orders from political parties.
Siddhivinayak Knots, better known as "LAXMIPATI," is the leading textile group in Surat. They recently made new caps, that resemble the traditional caps worn in Uttarakhand for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, used in the last Vidhansabha elections across various states. This same business group in Surat has also received a large order for various campaign goods.
