State University of New York at New Paltz has announced the appointment of Dr. Rene S. Parmar as the new Dean of the School of Education, effective Aug.1, 2024.
Parmar, currently the Dean of the School of Education at Lehman College, brings more than 40 years of experience in education to the role, the university noted in a statement.
Provost William McClure expressed his enthusiasm for Parmar's appointment, highlighting her extensive background and innovative approach. "I’m really delighted that Rene will be joining the academic leadership at SUNY New Paltz as Dean of the School of Education," he said.
"I am confident she will bring the right combination of relevant experience, creative thinking, and professional success to her new role,” McClure added.
Parmar has served at Lehman College since 2021, where she managed three institutes and centers collaborating with public and charter schools in The Bronx. Her tenure included developing new degree programs, expanding online offerings, and promoting anti-racist and anti-oppression practices.
Previously, Parmar spent 25 years at St. John’s University as a professor and later as chairperson of the department of administrative and instructional leadership. She has also held a tenured professorship at the University at Buffalo, where she co-created a Ph.D. program in special education.
Parmar’s academic credentials include a Ph.D. in special education from the University of North Texas, an M.Ed. in special education from Vanderbilt University, and a B.A. in Liberal Arts and Economics from the University of Jabalpur, India. She has published widely on educational assessment and leadership for inclusive environments.
