Suhas Subramanyam, a state senator from Loudoun County, Virginia emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Virginia’s 10th congressional district on June 18, securing his place as the nominee to succeed retiring Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton.

The Indian American, whose campaign focused on his record and service as both a state representative and state senator, outdid the 12 other democrats vying for the nomination in the district by obtaining 30 percent of the votes. He was closely followed by State Representative Dan Helmer, who is fending off a last-minute accusation of sexual harassment.

“I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District,: he said. “This district is my home. I got married here. My kids were born here. The issues our community faces are personal to our family. I will continue to be a champion for families here and make sure everyone feels like they have a voice.”

He thanked his “friend and mentor,” Rep. Wexton, for her “fearless leadership and support.” Though she “will leave big shoes to fill", Subramanyam said he’s ready for the challenge. The 10th District, historically a Republican stronghold, has leaned Democratic since Wexton’s victory in 2018. Subramanyam’s primary win is seen as a stabilizing development for Democrats eager to retain control of the seat.

The Indian American Impact Fund that invested over $600,000 in his campaign, supporting efforts through mail and digital outreach, congratulated Subramanyam on his primary win. Chintan Patel, executive director of Indian American Impact Fund, praised Subramanyam's leadership and accomplishments, emphasizing his potential to address key issues such as reproductive rights, climate change, healthcare, and education.

"We are thrilled to celebrate Suhas Subramanyam's victory in the Virginia congressional primary. The voters of the 10th district recognized what we've known from the beginning—Suhas’s proven leadership and accomplishments are exactly what we need in Congress," Patel said. The fund highlighted Subramanyam's broad endorsements, including support from outgoing Representative Jennifer Wexton, as a testament to his widespread appeal.

Subramanyam will face Mike Clancy from the Republican Party in the general election.
