Germany-based non-profit multi stakeholder organization, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has named Indian-origin climate change activist, Subhra Bhattacharjee as its new director general effective Oct. 1.
Bhattacharjee, a seasoned expert in climate change and sustainable development, brings more than 20 years of experience working with governments, NGOs, academia, and the private sector worldwide.
She previously worked for the United Nations and the Reserve Bank of India, with a brief stint in academia. Her appointment comes as FSC aims to enhance global forest stewardship, promote sustainable forest management, and address urgent global climate and biodiversity challenges, a release stated.
“Subhra’s expertise and experience in international development and leadership will serve her well as she steps in at this critical juncture in FSC’s organizational growth,” said Stuart Valintine, chair of the FSC International board of directors.
Bhattacharjee’s vision aligns with FSC’s mission, emphasizing the importance of leveraging the organization’s global network and partnerships. “We must act urgently to mitigate the ongoing global climate and biodiversity crises, and the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of forests with respect for forest-dependent communities is critical for this,” Bhattacharjee said.
Bhattacharjee holds a Doctor of Philosophy in economics from Iowa State University and a Master of Philosophy from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), established in 1993, is a global non-profit organization promoting responsible forest management through timber certification. Its standards are based on 10 principles, ensuring environmental, social, and economic responsibility.
