The Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation has awarded the 2024 leader in innovation award to Suresh Vedantham, a professor of radiology and surgery at Washington University School of Medicine for his pioneering advances in image-guided therapies for venous blood clots, known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), and their complications.

Vedantham leads national, multisite trials funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), focusing on optimal catheter therapies for patients with post-thrombotic syndrome and pulmonary embolism. Notable among these is the Chronic Venous Thrombosis: Relief with Adjunctive Catheter Based Therapy (C-TRACT) trial.

The award recognizes his innovative approach to clinical research and his interdisciplinary leadership in developing and refining new treatments and leading clinical trials, which have significantly influenced clinical guidelines for VTE and post-thrombotic syndrome.

In addition to his research, he serves as the director of the Trial-CARE clinical trial support service at Washington University School of Medicine and is an assistant dean for clinical research. His role involves coordinating and supporting clinical trials across various medical disciplines.

Vedantham completed his fellowship in Interventional Radiology at Stanford University. He completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He holds an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University.
