The Sikh Coalition –a Sikh-American non-profit advocacy group that defends Sikh civil rights – has announced the appointment of Harman Singh as the organization’s new executive director.
Singh joined the Sikh Coalition in November 2021 as senior manager of education and transitioned into a new role as Policy and Education Director in July 2023. In leading the organization’s education work and advocacy campaigns, he has testified in front of state legislatures, overseen congressional and administration engagement on various topics, and advocated tirelessly for the inclusion, security, and civil rights of Sikhs.
Prior to joining the Sikh Coalition, Singh spent seven years working in higher education as a PhD Program Coordinator and Academic Auditor at the University of Michigan and as an Academic Advisor at Wayne State University.
Additionally, he co-founded Seva4Everybody, a grassroots organization focused on addressing basic needs and providing support for residents of Detroit, as well as offering mentorship opportunities for Sikh youth.
“I am honored to be stepping into this role at the Sikh Coalition as we continue to defend and expand Sikh civil rights in the United States and push for a generational shift in Sikh awareness across the country,” said Singh. “I look forward to collaborating with sangats across the nation as we face a pivotal moment for the panth, including our response to the threats we continue to face, from hate, discrimination, and bullying to transnational repression from abroad."
Additionally, the Sikh Coalition has announced promotions within its leadership team. Graham F West is now managing director of communications and policy, bringing his experience from roles as media and communications director and programs director.
Rucha Kaur has been appointed managing director of education and community development, leveraging her background as community development director and her recent work on the ‘Where Are You Really From?’ report. Giselle Klapper has been named legal director, building on her tenure as a Legal Fellow and Staff Attorney, as well as her roles as senior staff attorney and deputy legal director.
