Shots fired at Hindu temple president’s son in Canada
Temple president Satish Kumar said the attack could have been carried out by extortionists

Assailants opened fire on the home of Surrey's Lakshmi Narayan temple president Satish Kumar's son on December 27, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), British Columbia. While no injuries were reported a motive for the attack has yet to be established.
Kumar said attackers fired between 11 to 14 bullets at his son’s home. “I can say nothing about why it happened,” he said, according to a report. Kumar said cases of extortion in the area have gone up, and it could be the reason for the attack. “My son recently sold an insurance agency and they may have thought he had a lot of money.”
Parmbir Kahlon, the media relations officer of Surrey RCMP stated after the firing, “No one was injured during the incident, but the residence involved sustained damage consistent with bullet holes.”
Kahlon added, “Police remained in the area, examining the scene, speaking with witnesses and canvassing the neighbourhood for CCTV footage. The Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit has conduct of the investigation. Officers are still working to determine the motive of this incident.”
The attack comes a month after temple devotees participated in a peaceful counter-protest against Khalistani elements who had gathered outside the temple to protest a consular camp. The Khalistani elements had assembled to protest the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey on June 18. Around 200 counter-protesters faced off with 25 Khalistanis near the temple for three hours, after which the latter group decided to back off. “Everything ran very smoothly,” Kumar said at the time.
