Microsoft chairman and chief executive officer Satya Nadella recently highlighted the pivotal role of India’s developer community in building pioneering products and solutions to resolve challenges in India and the world.

Nadella addressed an audience of over 1,000 developers and technology leaders at the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru on February 8. In his address, he detailed the impact made by Indian developers in advancing AI innovation globally.

His recent visit to India coincided with his 10-year completion as Microsoft CEO. The India-born, Manipal Institute of Technology-educated tech boss took over the reins of the company from Steve Ballmer in 2014.

India is the fastest-growing market on GitHub, a Microsoft-owned software collaboration and innovation platform with 13.2 million developers using the platform. It is expected to overtake the US as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2027. India also has the second-highest number of generative AI projects on GitHub after the US, according to a statement.

“This next generation of AI is changing how and what developers build everywhere, including in India,” Nadella said. “It’s fantastic to see how India’s developer community is applying our technology and tools to build the future for India and the world,” he added.

Developers from nonprofit organizations, student developers, and large enterprises, including Sarvam AI, Shiksha copilot, Open Healthcare Network, and Persistent Systems’ Intelligent Digital Engineering Platform, showcased how Microsoft technologies helped accelerate their AI adoption and empowered them to innovate.

A day prior to his keynote address at the Microsoft AI Tour, Nadella met with top business leaders and decision-makers at Microsoft CEO Connection event in Mumbai. “India is uniquely positioned to make the promise of AI a reality,” Nadella said at the event. “We are committed to partnering broadly across the public and private sectors to help close the nation’s AI skills gap and create new opportunities throughout the country,” he remarked.

During the event, Nadella also announced Microsoft’s new skilling investment in India to empower people and organizations to succeed in the AI era. Through its ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA initiative, Microsoft aims to provide 2 million people in India with AI skilling opportunities by 2025.

The initiative, in partnership with India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship as well as 10 state governments, will provide basic and advanced AI training to 500,000 students and job seekers in 100 rural vocational educational institutions and training centers. Additionally, Microsoft will provide in-depth AI technical skills training for 100,000 young women through 5,000 trainers at higher educational institutions in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

The initiative has identified three key areas -- equipping India’s future workforce, upskilling government officials in AI, and working to build the AI capability of nonprofit organizations – to create AI fluency.
