Sanjay Virmani takes charge as special agent in DC counter-terrorism division
He has headed FBI's counterterrorism and international terrorism investigations.

Director Christopher Wray has appointed Sanjay Virmani, a veteran FBI official, as the special agent in charge of the FBI's Counterterrorism Division at the Washington field office.
The Indian American most recently held the position of deputy assistant director in the FBI Headquarters' Counterterrorism Division in Washington, DC.
After becoming a special agent in 2003, Virmani worked on terrorist and cyber cases out of the FBI's San Francisco field office. He was promoted to supervisory special agent in the counterterrorism division in 2007.
He was chosen in 2010 to serve as the supervisory special agent in charge of the Joint Terrorism Task Force in the Oakland Resident Agency for the San Francisco field office. He oversaw a group of agents, analysts, and task force officers who worked on investigations into acts of international terrorism in that capacity.
In 2013, Virmani took the position of director of the INTERPOL Digital Crime Center at the Singapore-based INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation. In this capacity, he oversaw the directorate's operational support for INTERPOL's 190 member nations in addressing the danger of cybercrime.
The Indian American rejoined FBI headquarters in 2016 and took up the position of unit chief of the Cyberterrorism unit, whose mission was to locate, gather information, and take down cyber terrorists and their networks around the world.
Returning to the counterterrorism division in 2021, Virmani served as section chief of the Strategic Partner Engagement Section, where he managed the FBI's liaison activities on counterterrorism-related concerns with the law enforcement community, US interagency, and private sector partners. He also oversaw the Tampa Field Office as the acting special agent in 2022.
Virmani attained a master's degree in business administration from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, after his bachelor's in industrial engineering from California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo.
