Sanjay Mehrotra to receive honorary degree

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for contributions in technology.

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has named Sanjay Mehrotra, president and CEO of Micron Technology, as one of the of honorary degree recipients to be honored at the commencement ceremony, scheduled to be held on May 10.

Mehrotra will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his leadership of Micron Technology one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies.

Under his leadership the firm, aims to establish the largest semiconductor manufacturing facility in U.S. history in central New York under the government’s CHIPS and Science Act. It has also been making strides in the computing architecture and artificial intelligence sector driving new opportunities for memory and storage technologies.

Mehrotra boasts over 40 years of experience in the non-volatile semiconductor memory industry, having co-founded and led SanDisk to Fortune 500 status before its acquisition by Western Digital in 2016. He also serve in various roles at leading technology firms like Integrated Device Technology Inc., SEEQ Technology, and Intel Corp.

The Indian American has earned global recognition, with over 70 patents to his name and his election into the National Academy of Engineering in 2022.

After immigrating from India at the age of 18, Mehrotra earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. He later enrolled at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business Executive Education program.

Along with Mehrotra, RIT will confer honorary degrees to designer and gerontologist Pattie Moore, Choreographer Garth Fagan, and university professor Rita Colwell.

“We are honored to award these distinguished individuals with honorary degrees in recognition of their pioneering contributions to science, engineering, the arts, and design, and to society as a whole,” said RIT President David Munson. 

“Their achievements are a testament to their remarkable combination of creativity, talent, and perseverance. As we encourage our graduates to make a difference in the world, these honorary degree recipients provide inspiration to our graduates, and to the entire RIT community, through their groundbreaking innovation.”
