Sandhya Reddy appointed as deputy mayor in Sydney
As the deputy mayor, Reddy will be responsible for chairing meetings and attending ceremonies on behalf of Mayor Karen Pensabene.

Sandhya Reddy became the first Indian Australian person to secure a mayoral position in the Strathfield Council of Sydney, Australia, the election for which took place earlier thiis month.
“Strathfield Council is pleased to announce that at its ordinary Council Meeting on 5 September, Councillor Karen Pensabene was elected Mayor, with Councillor Sandy (Sandhya) Reddy elected as Deputy Mayor,” the council posted on its official Facebook page.
Reddy was elected to the Strathfield Council in December 2021. She contested in the recent election as an independent candidate. Her role will entail chairing meetings and attending ceremonies on behalf of the mayor, as per the Strathfield Council’s website.
Born in Hyderabad, Reddy completed her intermediate studies at Stanley College and later obtained a law degree and a postgraduate degree from Osmania University. She moved to Australia in 1991 following her marriage.
Reddy worked as an immigration lawyer before she entered politics. Years after being elected to the council, she was honoured for the services that she rendered to the community. She was awarded 'Strathfield Citizen of the Year' award in 2020. Through her efforts, a bust of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was installed in Homebush community centre in Strathfield, as per a Times of India report.
