Brown University has appointed attorney Sandhya L. Iyer as its new senior vice president and general counsel, leveraging her extensive legal expertise and a proven track record in higher education.
Iyer, who has served as the chief legal officer at Dartmouth College since 2017, will now lead the legal team at Brown’s Office of the General Counsel. In this role, she will advise the University’s senior leadership on a wide array of legal and strategic matters, covering areas from academic affairs to risk management.
Brown president Christina H. Paxson welcomed Iyer's appointment, acknowledging her qualifications. "With more than 15 years as chief legal officer at two prestigious institutions and prior experience in federal agencies, Sandhya brings a depth of understanding that is crucial for navigating the complex legal landscape of higher education," Paxson said.
Iyer's career is marked by significant achievements, including her tenure as Oberlin College’s first general counsel, where she established a new model for in-house legal services. She also held key positions within the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Justice, where she earned recognition for her work in civil rights litigation.
Iyer expressed her enthusiasm for joining Brown, citing the University's commitment to academic excellence and community engagement. "I’m drawn to Brown’s enduring commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and inclusion," Iyer said. "I look forward to working with the talented team at the Office of the General Counsel to support Brown’s mission and its impact on the world."
