As ChatGPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest multimodal AI model that integrates text, voice, and vision makes headlines, the credit for its innovation has been given to Indian-origin techie Prafulla Dhariwal.
Dhariwal, who is based in San Francisco but hails from Pune, was named as a pivotal figure in the creation of the artificial intelligence (AI) model by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The latter praised Dhariwal's instrumental role in this achievement, acknowledging his vision, talent, and determination in developing the revolutionary model.

Dhariwal currently serves as a research scientist at OpenAI and leads the Omni team, which created the model. ChatGPT-4o marks a significant advancement in AI technology, enabling seamless processing and response generation across various data types. This model, showcased at OpenAI’s Spring Update event, demonstrated its capability to handle audio, images, and text simultaneously with remarkable speed and accuracy.
Coming from humble beginnings in Pune, India, Dhariwal has worked his way up to become a leader in artificial intelligence innovation. In 2009, he was awarded the National Talent Search Scholarship and went on to win gold medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad, International Physics Olympiad, and International Astronomy Olympiad.
On a full scholarship, he attended the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics, gaining valuable experience as an undergraduate researcher at the Centre for Brain, Minds, and Machines.
This foundation paved the way for his significant contributions to OpenAI, where he joined as a research intern in 2016. Over the years, Dhariwal co-created several top AI models, including GPT-3, DALL-E 2, and Jukebox, earning over 70,000 citations in research papers.
