Rohit Sharma has been named India's captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be held in the Caribbean Islands and the United States.

Sharma guided the team in the ICC Men's ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, where India reached the finals but did not win.

“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, but we won hearts there by winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.

Shah made the announcement at the Niranjan Shah Stadium event in Rajkot and expressed optimism about India's prospects in the upcoming tournament.

Since the conclusion of the most recent T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022, Sharma has only participated in three T20 Internationals. During the final T20 inning of the Afghanistan series, he scored back-to-back ducks before also scoring the format's fifth century.

Hardik Pandya, who led the Indian T20I team prominently when Sharma was not available, is presently recovering from an ankle injury that kept him out of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
