Indian-American Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard Verma has been appointed as the US Special Representative for Ukraine’s Economic Recovery, Secretary of State Antony John Blinken announced.

This new role adds to Verma’s responsibilities as the number two official in the State Department. His appointment follows the departure of Special Envoy Penny Pritzker on Aug 6. Pritzker, who served as the Commerce Secretary during the Obama Administration, initiated efforts to aid Ukraine’s economic recovery in the aftermath of its ongoing conflict with Russia.

“Deputy Secretary for Resources and Management Rich Verma is going to be carrying on the work that Special Envoy Penny Pritzker has started when it comes to reconstruction and economic issues as it relates to our Ukrainian partners,” State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters during a briefing.

“Deputy Verma is going to continue to build on the foundation that Special Envoy Pritzker laid when it comes to private sector engagement, when it comes to working with our allies and partners to marshal the economic support that we know is so critical to the future of our Ukrainian partners,” he further added.

Verma’s extensive background in both government and the private sector is expected to be an asset in his new role. His unique blend of diplomatic and economic expertise positions him to build on the foundation laid by Pritzker, Patel noted.

This dual role is seen as not only an expansion of Verma’s responsibilities but also a recognition of his distinguished career. His leadership is expected to be pivotal in advancing American interests and aiding Ukraine’s recovery during this critical time.
