Researcher honoured by Royal Society of Canada

Pai holds key positions within many prominent international health organizations.

The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced 101 new fellows and 58 new members of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists. Madhukar Pai, a Tamil Nadu native and professor at McGill University’s Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health has been named one of the RSC Fellows for the class of 2023.

Pai holds key positions within international health organizations. He is a member of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Tuberculosis (TB) in the South-East Asia Region and the WHO Advisory Group on Tuberculosis Diagnostics and Laboratory. He also serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of FIND in Geneva.

He also serves  as the chair for the Public-Private Mix (PPM) Working Group of the Stop TB Partnership. Additionally, he contributes to the editorial boards of prominent journals, including Lancet Infectious Diseases, PLoS Medicine, and BMJ Global Health and serves as the editor-in-chief of PLOS Global Public Health.

Pai’s research primarily centres around enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, with a particular focus on high-burden countries such as India and South Africa. His research endeavours are bolstered by grant support from prominent institutions like the Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Pai has also received several prestigious awards, including the Union Scientific Prize, Chanchlani Global Health Research Award, Haile T. Debas Prize, and David Johnston Faculty & Staff Award.

On completing his medical training and community medicine residency in Vellore, India, Pai furthered his academic journey by earning a PhD in epidemiology from UC Berkeley, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at UC San Francisco
