Illinois Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spent last weekend in Detroit, Michigan, campaigning as a surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris.

His efforts, focused on mobilizing South Asian voters in the key swing state, come as part of a broader initiative to drive support for the Harris-Walz ticket ahead of the November election.

Partnering with the AAPI Victory Fund, Congressman Krishnamoorthi visited several places of worship, including a Hindu temple, and headlined a South Asian American Town Hall event. He was joined by Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, who is running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan.

“The enthusiasm in our community for the first-ever South Asian President of the United States is very real,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. “I will continue to travel across the country, and across the state of Illinois, to do everything I can to help elect Kamala Harris to be our next President of the United States.”

Krishnamoorthi’s support for Harris extends beyond Michigan. Over the past month, he has headlined multiple campaign events in other swing states, including Wisconsin and Nevada, where he participated in canvassing, phone banking, and town halls. He also serves as a member of the Harris Victory Fund National Finance Committee.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi made history as the first South Asian to serve in federal office from Illinois and the first to lead a committee in the U.S. Congress as Chair or Ranking Member.

As an Indian-American immigrant and one of the few naturalized citizens in Congress, Krishnamoorthi's role in the campaign is particularly significant in galvanizing support within the South Asian community.
