In a recent interview with MSNBC's Jen Psaki, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, voiced concern about potential challenges to President Joe Biden in the 2024 election. Her statement came in the wake of a pair of national polls that presented a worrisome picture for Biden's re-election prospects in key swing states.
The interview followed Rep. Rashida Tlaib's criticism of Biden's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Tlaib urged Israel to halt its strikes on Gaza, and accused the president of supporting "the genocide of the Palestinian people." While Jayapal didn’t use the term "genocide" herself, she acknowledged that Tlaib was not the first person to use it.
Jayapal emphasized the importance of rallying support for the president's re-election bid, as well as the moral crisis that many young people, including Muslim and Arab Americans, see in the ongoing conflict. "They are not going to be brought back to the table easily if we do not address this," she maintained during the interview on MSNBC's "Inside."
A recent national poll revealed a significant decline in support for Biden among Arab Americans, adding to the concerns. In addition, a New York Times/Siena College poll found Biden trailing Donald Trump in five key swing states.
Commenting on the poll, David Axelrod, former senior adviser to President Barack Obama, emphasized the potential impact on the Democratic Party, characterizing it as "legitimate concern" rather than mere "bed-wetting." Meanwhile, Biden's campaign spokesperson, Kevin Muñoz asserted that victory in 2024 would be achieved through dedicated efforts rather than fixating on poll results.
