Indian telecom service provider Reliance Jio has been confirmed as the world’s largest mobile data operator, according to an X ( formerly Twitter) blog by Sweden-based consulting and research company Tefficient.
The company had predicted this in the last quarter of 2023 and found that during the January to March 2024 period Jio had indeed surpassed China Mobile’s total data traffic of 38.9 exabytes to reach 40.9 exabytes, making this the world number one data carrier on mobile devices.
Jio is also the world’s second biggest 5G service provider with 108 million subscribers, accounting for nearly a third (28 percent) of its total subscriber base of 481.8 million.
Training and analytics company 5G WorldPro attributes this global data leadership by the Indian operator to a combination of reasons including Jio’s pocket-friendly subscription plans including unlimited 5G, robust infrastructure, its canny catering to Indian’s entertainment appetites with its own ‘Jio Cinema’ channel, its platform for gaming, own-brand online shopping and branded messaging with JioChat.
Tefficient reveals that interestingly, Jio's maximum use case of 5G is not from its mobile phone users but from its Fixed Wireless Access ( FWA) offering of 5G converted into WiFi broadband services for the home. This is a trend that other operators worldwide are emulating.
