Rajesh Agrawal, who has been serving as London's deputy mayor for business since 2016, announced his candidacy for a seat in the UK parliament after receiving the national nomination to represent the Leicester East constituency from the opposition Labour Party.
He was chosen for the next election after defeating another Indian-origin prospective candidate, Councillor Rishi Madlani in a local parliamentary contest.
“I’m honoured to be selected as the Labour Party’s Parliamentary candidate for Leicester East. It’s time to use this auspicious moment to reset Leicester East, with a Labour MP who’ll deliver for everyone who lives here. Together, let’s get Britain’s future back,” Agrawal said in the caption of a campaign announcement post on X, formerly Twitter.
“You deserve an MP who has earned respect and trust at the highest levels, who is passionately pro-business and pro-worker too, ambitious to attract investment that transforms your prospects, bridging the regional, cultural, economic, and religious differences that can too easily divide us. It’s how I have always worked…and it’s what I’ll do here too,” he is heard saying in his announcement video.
Born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Agrawal moved to the UK as a 24-year-old in 2001. He co-founded two companies, XendPay and RationalFX, and worked with his team to lower the cost of moving money for migrant workers and businesses, his campaign states.
Agrawal is the chairman of London & Partners in addition to his deputy mayor duties. The company, a not-for-profit public partnership, is an international trade, investment, and promotional agency for London city, and is funded by the mayor of London and a network of commercial partners.
The next election will be conducted in the UK before January 28, 2025. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will decide when to call the election.
