India’s bowling star Ravichandran Ashwin achieved a new milestone in his 100th Test match by taking the most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket for India.

The off-spinner claimed a fifer on Day 3 of the final Test match between India and England at Dharamshala, taking his total to 36 five-wicket hauls.

In doing so he broke the world record held by Muttiah Muralitharan to register the best bowling figures in the 100th match. He ended with figures of 9/128 while Muralitharan posted figures of 9/141 in his 100th Test.

Moreover, Ashwin broke Indian legend Anil Kumble’s record for the most five-wicket hauls by an Indian in Test history. The latter retired with 35 fifers to his name. Claiming a total of nine wickets, Ashwin also surpassed Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev, who were tied for most wickets by an Indian in the 100th Test (seven).

9/128 England's top order with a three-wicket burst on day three of the match, leaving the tourists facing their fourth defeat in the series. With the tourists down by 156 runs at the break, England skipper Ben Stokes was struck down.

Having resumed on 473-8 on the third day, India could only add four runs before losing their final two wickets. England's James Anderson became the first fast bowler to reach 700 Test wickets when he caught Kuldeep Yadav (30) behind.

India used Ashwin alongside Jasprit Bumrah for new ball responsibilities, and the off-spinner dismissed Ben Duckett (two) in his first over. He struck again in the third over, knocking Zak Crawley for a duck.

The Indian bowler wrecked the batting lineup off the Brits claiming wickets in quick succession. His record-breaking 36th five-wicket haul came when he dismissed wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes for 8.
