The US Navy (USN), the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF), the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) the Indian Navy, are currently participating in a naval exercise MALABAR 2023, which officially commenced on August 11, at Sydney Harbour, Australia.

The MALABAR series of maritime exercises was first held in 1992 as a bilateral exercise involving the Indian and US fleets. Over the years, the series has expanded in scale to now include the navies of the other two Quad members. RAN is hosting MALABAR for the 27th time this year.

The exercise will take part in two phases, i.e, Harbour phase and sea phase. Wide-ranging activities like cross-deck visits, business meetings, sporting events, and other encounters are all part of the Harbour Phase while the Sea Phase will comprise multiple complicated and intense anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine exercises, as well as live weapon firing drills, in all three domains of warfare.

The Indian side will be represented by the two naval ships Sahyadri and Kolkata. INS Sahyadri is currently under the command of Capt. Rajan Kapoor. Capt. Sharad Sinsunwal is in charge of INS Kolkata. Both vessels were constructed at Mazagon Dock Ltd. in Mumbai and are equipped with a cutting-edge array of weapons and sensors that can identify and eliminate threats in the surface, air, and underwater domains.
