Qatar Airways has announced a new route connecting Canada’s Toronto to Punjab’s Amritsar via Doha. The new route starting Dec. 11 is expected to significantly improve connectivity for the large Punjabi diaspora in Toronto, who often seek alternatives to flying through New Delhi.

The FlyAmritsar Initiative (FAI), a global advocacy campaign for direct flights and development of Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport Amritsar welcomed the news.

“With the introduction of this new route, Amritsar will now have ten-weekly flights to Canada via Doha, offering much-needed relief for travelers who have previously endured long road journeys to Delhi, extended layovers, and multiple check-ins. The new route simplifies the travel experience, making it faster and more convenient.,” Anantdeep Singh Dhillon, FAI North America Convener stated.

FAI Global Convener Sameep Singh Gumtala pointed out that airlines like Qatar Airways and Neos Air have addressed the demand for more convenient routes. At the same time, Air India continues to overlook the opportunity to introduce direct non-stop flights between Amritsar and Canada.

The flight from Amritsar will depart at 4:10 a.m. (local time), arriving in Doha at 6:05 a.m.(local time). Following a 3-hour, 45-minute layover, passengers will board the Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Toronto at 9:50 a.m. (local time) on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, arriving in Toronto the same day at 3:55 p.m. (local time).

The return flight will depart Toronto at 8:00 p.m. (local time), arriving in Doha at 4:30 p.m.(local time) the next day. Passengers will then catch the connecting flight at 8:40 p.m.(local time), reaching Amritsar by 2:40 a.m. (local time). The total travel time is approximately 20 hours and 10 minutes.

FlyAmritsar Initiative reaffirmed its commitment to improving international connectivity from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport and urged Punjabis to prefer flying from Amritsar over other transit hubs. “We urge airlines to recognize the massive potential that Amritsar holds and to respond to the community’s demand for direct connectivity..”
