India's hope at the French Open 2023 badminton tournament was cut short as PV Sindhu retired hurt in her women's singles match and the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a defeat in the men's doubles round of 16 in Rennes, France.

Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, was in a match against Thailand's Supanida Katethong before an unfortunate injury to her left knee forced her out of the tournament. After winning the first game 21-18, Sindhu decided to retire early. This also left her semi-final appearances at the Arctic Open and Denmark Open in the dark.

Indian shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty fought against the Indonesian pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in their men's doubles match. Their defeat was after the exit of Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen and former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth from the men's singles category.

On the other hand, India bagged a silver medal at the Asian Para Games 2023, in Hangzhou. Sivarajan and Krishna Nagar bagged bronze medals in the Men’s doubles category. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X to extend his congratulations,  “Congratulations to @SIVARAJAN_INDIA and @Krishnanagar99 for their stellar Bronze Medal in the Para Badminton Men's Doubles SH6 event. Best wishes for all upcoming endeavours.”
