Preity Zinta, one of the most popular figures in Indian cinema, is set to make an appearance in Birmingham next month to lead the region's Diwali festivities. The Bollywood icon will join Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and chair of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), for an exciting weekend of events in collaboration with the Consulate General of India on November 4 and 5.
“Diwali is a special time for the Indian diaspora and communities right across our region are looking forward to celebrating the Festival of Lights. From the very outset of my time as Mayor, the WMCA has worked closely with local groups and the Consulate General of India to mark this occasion in suitably grand style - with dance, special guests and entertainment,” Mayor Street said.
Zinta's life story has resonated with audiences globally, extending from the subcontinent to Asia and the Middle East. As the recipient of two Filmfare Awards, which is India's equivalent of the Oscars, she is best known for her memorable role in the iconic film "Veer-Zaara," in addition to numerous other blockbuster movies.
Zinta is anticipated to receive honours from prominent civic and educational institutions in the city. Her visit is also expected to be met with enthusiastic reception by the numerous Indian students studying at colleges and universities in Birmingham, along with the large diaspora in the city and its surrounding region.
Speaking about her forthcoming visit, Zinta said, “I’m very excited to be part of the Diwali celebrations in Birmingham and look forward to meeting all the wonderful people there - marking the Festival of Lights together.”
On November 4, Zinta's schedule includes a tour of the thriving creative district of Digbeth, where she will visit Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight's Digbeth Loc studios. This will be followed by a drinks and networking reception at Millennium Point, and in the evening, there will be a gala dinner at Millennium Point. A cultural program is planned at Birmingham Town Hall on November 5 where Zinta will make a guest appearance on stage to light the divas.
