As we approach the 2024 U.S. elections, we stand at a critical juncture in the history of this great nation. For Indian Americans, this moment holds particular significance. We have come a long way as a community, contributing to all facets of American society—medicine, technology, business, and the arts, among others. Now, more than ever, it is essential that we lead with purpose by exercising one of the most powerful rights we possess in a democracy: the right to vote.

The Growing Influence of the Indian American Diaspora

The Indian American diaspora, now over four million strong, is one of the fastest-growing immigrant communities in the U.S. Our impact is no longer confined to the cultural or economic realms—we are now a formidable political force. As more Indian Americans assume leadership roles in government, advocacy, and public policy, it becomes clear that our voices matter. However, the true measure of our influence will be determined by our turnout at the polls in 2024.

Our community’s vote has the potential to shape key issues that resonate not only with us but also with broader American society: healthcare reform, immigration policies, education, and economic opportunities. We bring unique perspectives to the national discourse, but these perspectives must be reflected in the ballot box.

Leading with Purpose: Our Responsibility to Participate

Leading with purpose means understanding that voting is not just a civic duty but a moral obligation. As Indian Americans, many of us have experienced or are aware of struggles for democratic freedoms in other parts of the world. The privilege to vote in a democracy is not one to be taken lightly. It is our collective responsibility to honor that privilege by actively participating in the electoral process.

Voting is our chance to choose leaders who align with our values, address our concerns, and work to improve our country. Whether it is the future of healthcare, advancements in technology, or policies that impact international relations—our voices can shape the next chapter of American history.

Why Every Vote Matters

The 2020 elections demonstrated the power of every single vote. In battleground states, the margins of victory were often razor-thin. Indian Americans, particularly in swing states like Texas, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, played a pivotal role in determining the outcome. The 2024 elections will likely be just as competitive, if not more so. This is why it is crucial that we show up in large numbers, ensuring our voices are heard loud and clear.

Key Issues for Indian Americans

As we head to the polls, it is important to reflect on the issues that affect not just us as individuals, but also our families, communities, and future generations:

1. Healthcare Access and Reform: As physicians and healthcare professionals, many of us know firsthand the need for comprehensive healthcare reforms that ensure quality care for all. Policies that support equitable access, healthcare technology, and innovation must be prioritized.

2. Immigration Reform: The ability for future generations of Indian Americans to contribute to the U.S. is closely tied to immigration policies. The H-1B visa program, family reunification, and pathways to citizenship for skilled professionals are critical issues for our community.
3. Education and Opportunity: As a community that values education, policies that strengthen public schools, make higher education accessible, and promote research and innovation will determine our children’s future.
4. Global Leadership and Diplomacy: The U.S.-India relationship is essential for strategic, economic, and cultural partnerships. It is vital to elect leaders who understand the importance of this relationship and are committed to fostering it.

How You Can Make a Difference

As president of AAPI, I urge each one of you to get involved, stay informed, and most importantly, vote. Your vote is your voice. It reflects your hopes for the future of this country and the world. Encourage your family members, friends, and neighbors to do the same. Our strength lies not just in our numbers, but in our ability to come together and lead with purpose. In this pivotal election, we have the opportunity to influence the future direction of the United States.

As Indian Americans, we are woven into the fabric of this nation. Our contributions have helped build the U.S. into the global leader it is today. But our work is far from finished. By leading with purpose and exercising our right to vote, we continue the legacy of progress, resilience, and hope for a brighter future.
