POLITICO appoints Sonia Fernandes as HR and diversity officer

Fernandes' twin role demonstrates the company's dedication to promoting a diverse work environment

POLITICO media group has appointed Sonia Fernandes as its global chief human resources and diversity officer. In her new role, she will be in charge of organizing, coordinating, and directing POLITICO's talent functions across all continents, an official statement noted.

As POLITICO's first chief diversity officer, Fernandes will spearhead improvements to enhance each employee's experience, professional development, and well-being throughout seven newsrooms, two continents, and seven time zones.

 



Mark Dekan, POLITICO Media Group’s chief operating officer, said, “Sonia brings a wealth of international experience and a fresh perspective to POLITICO. Her role is integral to building upon POLITICO’s track record as the most successful news start-up of the 21st century as we grow into a top global brand.”

Calling it a privilege to join POLITICO, Fernandes noted, “I look forward to the exciting journey ahead and the limitless possibilities we'll create together as a team.” She will start her new position on February 8 at POLITICO's Rosslyn, Virginia headquarters.

With over two decades of human resources (HR) management experience in global entities like KPMG, Bain & Co., and MediaCom, Fernandes has a deep understanding of international HR management and has successfully integrated cross-border strategies to align with commercial objectives. She has designed 75 grassroots programs and led M&As, implementing talent-mapping programs.

Born in India, Fernandes graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from the University of Mumbai. She went on to pursue a master's degree in management and employment relations from the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
