Penn State Health has appointed Ajay Saini as its first medical director of quality, a newly created systemwide role aimed at enhancing patient care and safety. His appointment takes effect immediately.

Saini, who currently serves as an assistant professor at Penn State College of Medicine, teaching internal medicine, will be responsible for developing quality and patient safety initiatives across Penn State Health, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a culture of high reliability.

He will collaborate with chief medical officers at each hospital, facility quality teams, and system leadership to drive improvements.

“When we envisioned this new role, we did so with the idea that strengthening our quality, patient safety and experience is at the forefront of everything we do,” said Kenneth Wood, chief medical officer at Penn State Health, who will supervise the position. “Along with having a deep familiarity with our health system, Saini is an experienced leader who understands what is necessary to achieve the best patient outcomes.”

Saini brings more than two decades of medical experience to his new role. He previously served as the inaugural chair of medicine at Hampden Medical Center and as regional medical director of inpatient services for Penn State Health Medical Group.

“The prospect of guiding and enhancing the quality of patient care, coupled with the opportunity to form a team that will use best practices to find innovative healthcare solutions is extremely inspiring,” Saini said.

Saini earned his MBBS from Government Medical College in Patiala, India, completed an internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai/VA Medical Center in New York, and holds an MBA in healthcare from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is certified by the National Association for Healthcare Quality.
