Northwestern University names Ravi Kalhan as associate dean for faculty affairs

Kalhan currently serves as Louis A. Simpson Professor of Pulmonary Medicine and a professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care

The Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine has appointed Dr. Ravi Kalhan as the new associate dean for Faculty Affairs. 

Kalhan currently serves as Louis A. Simpson Professor of Pulmonary Medicine and a professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, brings significant experience to the role.

"Dr. Kalhan's extensive leadership experience, particularly within the Center for Education and Career Development at Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences, will bring a fresh, innovative perspective to our Office for Faculty Affairs," said Farzaneh Sorond vice dean for Faculty Affairs. 

"We are thrilled to have him on board and confident that his dedication to our academic community will greatly benefit our faculty, students, and the broader scientific community at Feinberg,” she added.

In his new role, Kalhan will oversee faculty recruitment, retention, promotion, and career development at Feinberg. He will also serve as a resource for faculty seeking guidance on academic and professional matters, supporting programs aimed at enhancing clinical, teaching, and leadership skills.

"Having spent my entire career at Feinberg, I have benefited from our rich environment for growth as a faculty member," Kalhan said. "I am excited to join Dr. Sorond and the Faculty Affairs team in nurturing an academic community that empowers all members of our faculty to achieve their maximum potential in clinical innovation, medical education, and scientific discovery."

Kalhan is recognised for leading a groundbreaking nationwide study tracking lung health in millennials, backed by a US$ 26 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. His research primarily focuses on respiratory epidemiology, including large-scale cohort studies on the transition from respiratory health to chronic lung disease.

He obtained a MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a Master of Science degree from Feinberg. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Northwestern's McGaw Medical Center.
