California governor Gavin Newsom appointed Indian American Nilu Patel to the California Board of Registered Nursing. Her appointment was announced along with a slew of other appointments announced by the Governor\s office.
Patel has been a certified registered nurse anesthesist (CRNA) at the University of California, Irvine since 2008. She has served as a faculty instructor of clinical anesthesiology at the University of Southern California (USC) since 2006.
Additionally, Patel is also a member of the California Association of Nurse Anesthesists and a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology. She acquired a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she was awarded the AD William Scholarly Achievement Award.
The Indian American decided to pursue her Masters in the field after discovering that she did not like her experience tending to patients. As a nursing undergraduate she was assigned to help care for an older woman during her first hospital rotation.
“It wasn’t what I thought it would be. I don’t like seeing patients in pain,” she said adding that Nurse anesthesia was the perfect match for her as it allowed her to “relieve people’s pain in my own environment, which is the operating room.”
