Nikki Haley has emerged as the top alternative for the upcoming Republican presidential primary frontrunner Donald Trump in New Hampshire. While Trump continues to lead, Haley has caught up to him by consolidating much of the non-Trump vote, a CBS/YouGov poll released on December 18 reveals.
The results come days after N.H. Gov. Chris Sununu endorsed Haley. “This is an opportunity for New Hampshire to lead this country, for New Hampshire to say we’re not looking in the rearview mirror anymore,” Sununu said during an appearance at a Haley campaign town hall in Manchester, N.H. on December 12.
According to the CBS poll’s findings, when asked who they would vote for if the Republican primary election was held today, 29 per cent said Haley, next to 44 per cent who said Trump.
53 per cent of the GOP primary voters described Haley as “prepared”, compared to 54 per cent who described Trump as “prepared” five weeks ahead of the First in the Nation Primary election, scheduled to be held in N.H. on January 23, 2024. The other GOP candidates in the race, Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Chris Christie respectively had 44 per cent, 39 per cent, and 29 per cent of respondents describing them as “prepared.”
A large majority of GOP primary voters described Haley as “likable” and a “reasonable” GOP candidate, compared to the rest. However, Haley fell slightly behind when 66 per cent and 45 per cent of GOP primary voters respectively described Trump and DeSantis as “strong leaders”, pushing Haley to the third position with 41 per cent of respondents describing her as one.
As part of the poll, 32 per cent respondents said Haley could “definitely” beat President Joe Biden, who is also seeking a second term. Haley’s campaign also released a video on December 19 in which she targets President Joe Biden.
“I’ll just say it Biden is too old and Congress is the most exclusive nursing home in America. Washington keeps failing because politicians from yesterday cannot lead us into tomorrow. We need term limits, mental competency tests, and a real plan to defeat China and restore our economy. We have to leave behind the chaos and drama of the past with a new generation and a new conservative president,” Haley said in the video.
