Penguin Random House, the world's largest trade book publisher, officially announced Nihar Malaviya as the CEO on a permanent basis. Malaviya, a publishing executive, had been the interim CEO since January 1, 2023, and the president and chief operating officer since 2014.
Bertelsmann Chairman & CEO, Thomas Rabe, expressed confidence in Malaviya's leadership, stating, “In Nihar Malaviya, the right leader is at the helm of Penguin Random House at the right time. Nihar has proven exactly this over the past nine months, and I am delighted that he is now taking over responsibility for Penguin Random House on a permanent basis. As interim CEO, Nihar has set an important strategic course. Most importantly, he has transformed the structures at Penguin Random House so that the publishers and publishing groups can work more creatively and entrepreneurially. I am confident that he will continue to develop the Group with great vigour. I look forward to continuing to work with him as CEO of Penguin Random House and on the GMC.”
Malaviya’s track record in the publishing industry is marked by innovation and strategies that aim to reach a broader audience for the company's authors across various formats and platforms. During his tenure, Malaviya introduced several industry-first initiatives, including advancements in data science, supply chain management, technology, and consumer insights.
Malaviya is also a member of Bertelsmann's Group Management Committee (GMC), a group of executives that advises the Group's Executive Board. Malaviya's journey within Bertelsmann began in 2001 when he joined the Bertelsmann Entrepreneurs Program. In 2003, he transitioned to Random House within the group and steadily climbed the leadership roles. His academic background includes an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the NYU Stern School of Business, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
