Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra qualified for the men’s javelin throw final on day 6 of the qualifying round at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary. Chopra produced a season’s best throw of 88.77 m, breaching the automatic qualifying mark set at 85.20m, in the first attempt, resulting in a direct entry to the finals scheduled for August 27.
Chopra also managed to breach the Paris 2024 Olympic entry standard with his 88.77m throw in Budapest. The qualifying window for the 2024 Paris Olympics began on July 1, 2023, for track and field athletes and will continue till June 30, 2024.
“I had a couple of good throws during my warm-up and I felt confident that I would make it past the first round,” the 25-year-old said after qualifying for the final, as per a media report. "I have not competed much this year because I wanted to protect myself from injuries ahead of this competition. I’ll give my everything at this year’s world championships final on Sunday." Chopra added.
The Olympic gold medalist missed competing at the FBK Games Netherlands and the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland in June due to an injury suffered during training. He competed in the Doha Diamond League in May, where he won the gold medal with a throw of 88.67m,
Chopra’s phenomenal performance at the Diamond League 2022 held in Zurich helped him win the trophy, and the honor of becoming the first Indian athlete to win it. It was this win that helped him secure an entry to the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
