My Village scheme launched on Tamil Diaspora Day

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the My Village scheme on the occasion of World Tamil Diaspora Day 2024 held in Chennai on January 12. The scheme welcomes individual contributions to the welfare of their native villages in Tamil Nadu. Minister for Law of Singapore, K Shanmugam, also attended the event.





During the two-day event, the Chief Minister felicitated the Tamil diaspora abroad, excelling in the fields of Tamil literature, education, women empowerment, trade and science. The ceremony took place under the theme Tamil Vellum, meaning Tamil will win.

Several individuals were recognized for their contribution to the diaspora with a gold medal, including, Dr Sudhagar Pitchaimuthu from the UK felicitated under the technology category; Subramanian Thinnappan from Singapore and Vaidhehi Herbert from the US were recognized in the field of Tamil literature; Bala Swaminathan from the US for education; Chitra Mahesh from US for women; and Pakkirisamy Rajamanickam from US for commerce. 

The event was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu's Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.

"Earlier, we used to read news about Tamils going to foreign countries being cheated by agents. But now, there are few cases due to efforts taken by the non-resident Tamils welfare department," Udhayanidhi Stalin was quoted in the media.

The event saw over 40 Tamil diaspora exhibitions focusing on Tamil welfare, upliftment, and culture. Further, a book release took place noting the 100th anniversary of the late writer, politician and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Muthuvel Karunanidhi.

The program took note of cultural tour experiences shared by 57 Tamil diaspora students who visited countries like Australia, Canada, and England, under a program 'in search of root.'
