Mumbai is ranked 12th best city in the world, leaving behind Los Angeles, Chicago, Melbourne, and Amsterdam, in Time Out's annual survey of city-dwellers globally.
The 1st rank was occupied by New York City, while Vancouver took the 5th position in the ranking. Mumbai is officially the only Indian city on the list of the world’s best cities. Additionally, it is one of the two cities on the list to attract 100 percent approval for its food delicacies.
The survey, based on local opinions and insights, ranks cities based on quality, affordability, food, culture, and nightlife. The survey also gauges happiness, beauty, and social connections. More than 100 well-traveled staff writers and editors also contributed to the ranking.
As international travel is expected to rebound following COVID-19 lockdowns, Time Out added an extra layer of appeal by asking respondents to choose cities they would most like to live in.
“Mumbai is India in a nutshell – from history to modernity, spirituality to sports, a colonial past to a dynamic present – all sprinkled with liberal doses of Bollywood magic and wrapped in the balmy breeze of the Arabian Sea,” the publication stated in its report.
“The city exhilirates with contrasts. Grab your hiking shoes to explore the 1500-year-old rock-cut Kanheri Caves and don your evening best for a swish cocktail bar in Kamala Mills. Bargain at dawn at the Dadar Flower Market and then splurge at Kala Ghoda’s haute couture boutiques. Dare a rush-hour ride on the local trains and then find peace of mind in Gorai’s Vipassana Centre. Marvel at the enterprising spirit in Dharavi’s shanties and gawk at the towering Antilla, home to India’s wealthiest man,” it added.
The report further described Mumbai, the financial capital of India, as a must-visit place, calling the city’s cultural scene, enriched by the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, a world-class arts space.
