Rajasthan Royals (RR) climbed to the top of the points table in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) by defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) with six wickets to spare at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, Apr.1.

Pacer Trent Boult was instrumental in RR's triumph; in the first innings, he dismissed former MI captain Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir and Dewal Brevis in the span of four deliveries, claiming three vital wickets. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who shared important wickets with Boult, helped limit MI to 125/9 in their 20 overs.

Following a breakthrough by young pacer Kwena Maphaka, RR suffered an early setback in their pursuit of the target when opener Yashasvi Jaiswal departed after scoring 10 runs off 6 deliveries. Despite losing captain Sanju Samson for 12 runs, RR's chase was anchored by Riyan Parag's unbeaten knock of 54 off 39 balls.

MI's bowling attack managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals, but Parag's partnership with Shubham Dubey (8 off 6 balls) ensured RR's victory. His explosive batting, including two consecutive sixes in the 16th over, sealed the win for RR with 39 balls to spare.

Boult, who was named Player of the Matchfor his fiery spell said, “Never a certainity in this format, but happy to fill my role and take wickets with the new ball. We won the toss, did what we spoke about, got a couple of wickets and put the pressure on the batters” With this win, RR maintained their winning streak in the tournament, while MI faced their third consecutive defeat, highlighting their early-season struggles in IPL 2024.
