US President Donald Trump announced on Jan.27 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the United States in February.

“He (PM Modi) will visit the US sometime in February,” Trump said in a press gaggle on Jan.27.

When asked about discussions regarding illegal immigrants and whether PM Modi agrees to take them back, Trump responded, "He will do what's right. We discussed it."

Earlier that day, Trump spoke with Prime Minister Modi over the phone, where both leaders reiterated their commitment to advancing a "mutually beneficial and trusted partnership" between the two nations. President Trump emphasized the importance of India’s increasing procurement of US-manufactured defense equipment, underscoring a balanced trading relationship.

The two also discussed regional security concerns, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, where India plays a crucial role within the Quad framework.

Prime Minister Modi’s last visit to the US was in September 2024 for the fourth Quad Leaders' summit, hosted by then-President Joe Biden. The summit was attended by the prime ministers of Australia and Japan, Anthony Albanese and Fumio Kishida, respectively.

Trump’s most recent visit to India occurred in February 2020, during the “Namaste Trump” event. The visit, which included a high-profile rally in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, followed the "Howdy Modi" event in Houston, Texas, in September 2019. This marked the beginning of a growing diplomatic connection between the two nations.

The India-US relationship has evolved significantly over the past 15 years, moving from Cold War-era mistrust to a partnership based on nuclear energy cooperation and defense trade. The landmark civil nuclear cooperation agreement in 2008 marked a key turning point in bilateral ties, further solidifying the growing alliance.
